Want to make a natural version of “Goo Gone” for under $5, with products you already have in your pantry? Me too. And you’ll be happy to know that I’m not just teasing you – it’s doable. You can thank me later.
I’m a little bit crazy when it comes to toxic products in our home. I got rid of all the chemical-filled cleaning products a long time ago, but there were some things that I couldn’t find replacements for. One of them was the ever-handy “Goo Gone.” How else would I scrub off those pesky stickers from the bottoms of items in our home?
BUT, I came across a recipe for an alternative; one that involves the ever-versatile coconut oil and it’s equally versatile cousin, baking soda. I should have known these two powerhouses could team up and make something pretty kick-ass for around the house.
This one is so easy, it’s almost ridiculous.
You’ll Need:
- Baking Soda
- Coconut Oil
- A clean jar
(seriously, that’s it.)
The How-To
Mix equal parts baking soda and coconut oil (I used 2 tbsp. of each) in a jar. Mix together well.
THAT’S IT. Just use sparingly on a cloth or paper towel to scrub off unwanted stickers or other junk off of the product in question. And to test it, I grabbed one of my favorite candle holders which had an obnoxious sticker at the bottom. I dabbed some of the mixture onto a paper towel, applied it to the sticker, and gave it some elbow grease:
VOILA!!
This cost under $5, took under 5 minutes, and eliminated probably 500 or so toxins from my medicine cabinets. Thank you, coconut oil and baking soda for coming through in yet another I-can’t-believe-I-didn’t-know-this, why-have-I-been-wasting-my-money-all-these-years, moment.
What do you think? Did you know about this trick? Anymore uses for coconut oil you can share? I’m on to whipping up a body scrub – I’ll share it next week here at PunkWife.com. […] 2. Natural, organic version of “Goo Gone.” I almost couldn’t believe this myself. It just goes to show you how much of our expensive (and toxic) products can often be replicated with everyday products in our pantry, for like, under five bucks. Check it out here. […]
That is great-I hate the smell of Goo Gone. I am going to post this link on my Pinterest page. Thanks!!!
Great Patty! The coconut smell is SO much better than the chemical smell….
That’s awesome! Another great use for Coconut oil! Thanks for the tip 🙂
I just bought coconut oil recently to start making some homemade products! didn’t know this one, either!
btw: where did you get those cute measuring spoons!
Hi Mary! The spoons came from Bed Bath and Beyond. Love them because they don’t take up much space! I have a matching set of measuring “cups” that are collapsible, too.
You are a terrific writer.
Thank you Deb! Your comment just made my day 🙂
